IT'S NEW YEAR IN ETHIOPIA(sept 11,2017)


Tomorrow September 11,2017 will be Ethiopia's New year day .Meskerem 1 in the Ethiopian calender this date marks the end of the rainy season.

Enkutatash :Ethiopian(Ithiopian)New year is celebrated in a colourful way.

This celebration started when the Queen of Sheba(An Ithiopian Queen ) returned from her visit to King Solomon of Isreal in Jerusalem, Her chiefs welcomed her by giving her "enku" jewels.On New years Eve touches made of dry leaves and wood are set on fire in front of houses,while people sing.


The next morning which is New Years day, Young and old dresses up in Ethiopian attires to attend church services.After church services family meals is eating ,this meal usually consist
of flat bread(Injera)and stew(Wat).

People send each others gifts during this season.Boys sell pictures while young girls adorned in  new clothes, gather daisies and present friends with a bouquet, singing New Year’s songs.

Enkutatash is Ethiopia's biggest celebration.The Ethiopian calendar was fixed to the Julian calendar in 25 BC by Emperor Augustus of Rome. It is eight years behind the normal Gregorian calender Which makes Setember 11,2017,  Meskerem 1,2010 in Ethiopia(Ithiopia)
